Now, imagine if this conversation is amongst a bunch of dudes! This is exactly what happened last week in Michigan. I've gotta admit - I was a little bewildered since this was a collegiate health and wellness conference, not an audience participation viewing of Rocky Horror Picture Show!
Tony Thompson, my client and the leader of the peer education network at Saginaw Valley State University, explained to the audience how he and a group of college men participated in a program called Walk A Mile In Her Shoes. It is, in essence, a one mile journey made by men who are, of all things, wearing women's shoes. Not only did these gutsy men participate, but they unified several hundred men from SVSU to walk with them!
If you happened to see a parade of hairy-legged men wearing stilettos and pumps, think you'd ask the question, "What the...?" THAT, faithful reader, is the exact response Tony and the boys wanted! The whole idea of Walk A Mile In Her Shoes is to raise awareness of sexual assault. Since the vast majority of this crime is committed by men, this program is designed to encourage guys to be a proactive part of the solution.
While Tony and the men of his peer education network explained all the work that went into the event, I was wondering one thing: would I have the guts to do this? Now, if there was a group of a few hundred guys, sure, I'd don a pair of pumps and start hiking. But what if this idea didn't fly? What if the day of the event rolled around and Tony and these three or four guys were the only ones willing to participate? That is precisely the question his peer educators asked.
Tony's answer is one of those rare glimpses of courage that has sparked much social change:
"Standing up for what you believe is always a risky proposition.
If you believe in your heart that something is right, the rest will fall into place."
How right he is! And history proves his point! Had the colonists not stood up for what they believed, our country would look much, much different today. Had Harriet Beecher Stowe not made her views known in Uncle Tom's Cabin, our country might still oppress human beings with slavery. Had Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the other women at Seneca Falls not made their presence known, women may have never gotten the right to vote, much less hold office. And the list goes on and on.
Going against popular opinion is never easy - even when there is little resistance. To stand up for what one believes through constant ridicule, intimidation or outright force is what truly makes change. To take such an active interest in helping to eliminate an injustice is commendable - not only commendable, but just plain brave. I wish Tony and the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes program continued success and, for the rest of us - may we be inspired by their example.
